Alcaraz rediscovers his best form to reach US Open quarterfinals

Carlos Alcaraz rediscovered his best form in his return to Grand Slam tennis, powering past Tommy Paul on Sunday to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals as defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and Wimbledon winner Linda Noskova also advanced to set up a heavyweight showdown.

The second-seeded Alcaraz looked increasingly dangerous with every game on Arthur Ashe Stadium, unleashing a barrage of powerful forehands and precise winners to beat Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

The 23-year-old Spaniard, competing in his first tournament since a wrist injury sidelined him for nearly five months, showed few signs of rust as he moved into the final eight with a commanding performance.

“I’m really happy to see where my level is right now,” Alcaraz told reporters. “Beating Tommy is always great feedback to see where you are, and I’m just really happy with everything I’ve done today.

“I saw the game really well, what I had to do in every moment, using the right things in every moment. Hopefully, I can keep it going.”

Alcaraz produced one of the biggest forehands of the match to set up match point before closing out the victory, sending a warning to a men’s field already weakened by the absence of injured world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and the early exit of Novak Djokovic.

Alcaraz is seeking his third U.S. Open title and will next face eighth-seeded American Ben Shelton, who kept the home crowd’s hopes alive by overpowering Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 under the lights.

“It felt like he’s playing at a completely different level than me,” Paul said. “I could have played a lot better and still lost.”

The American contingent endured mixed fortunes during a day that began with seven home favorites scheduled across the men’s and women’s singles draws.

Taylor Townsend fell to top-seeded Sabalenka, while Paul was beaten by Alcaraz, but Frances Tiafoe, Alex Michelsen, Shelton, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro all advanced.

Sabalenka withstands Townsend

Sabalenka continued her bid for a third consecutive U.S. Open title by overcoming the spirited challenge of 96th-ranked Townsend 6-4, 6-3.

The top seed had to work through a competitive match against Townsend, whose left-handed game and variety repeatedly tested the defending champion. Sabalenka eventually imposed her power and consistency to move into the quarterfinals.

“It was challenging,” Sabalenka said. “Going through tough challenges and overcoming challenges, it definitely gives you strength and belief that you can do it. These kinds of matches really boost your confidence.”

Sabalenka’s next opponent will be sixth-seeded Noskova, who survived a tense three-set battle with 11th-seeded Marta Kostyuk, winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.

Noskova needed six match points before sealing the victory with an unreturnable serve. The Czech dropped to the court in relief after finally closing out the contest.

The victory sends Noskova into her deepest run at Flushing Meadows and adds another milestone to a breakthrough season in which she captured her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

American men keep rolling

The U.S. men’s draw continues to offer its strongest showing in years, with five Americans reaching the fourth round, the most since 1995.

The group is chasing a first U.S. Open men’s singles title for an American since Andy Roddick won at Flushing Meadows in 2003.

Tiafoe strengthened those hopes with a straight-sets victory over seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev, beating the 2021 champion 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (6) in a raucous atmosphere on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Tiafoe improved to 10-0 at the court he has affectionately called the “people’s court.”

“Armstrong is crazy. It’s just an energy thing,” Tiafoe said. “Courts, dimensions, everything is the same on every court. Energy is insane. I kept requesting it.

“I’m happy I get to leave on the 10-0 record on that court. We’ll save it for next year. It’s just been fun.”

Tiafoe will meet fellow American Michelsen, who reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by beating Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-4 on Grandstand.

The 22-year-old Michelsen has yet to drop a set at the tournament.

Shelton’s victory over Tsitsipas gives the Americans another quarterfinalist, but his reward is a daunting matchup with Alcaraz.

Pegula, Navarro set all-American quarterfinal

Pegula also advanced, beating Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-4 in what was the Romanian’s final Grand Slam appearance.

Navarro completed the American sweep in the women’s draw with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Anna Kalinskaya.

That result sets up an all-American quarterfinal between Pegula and Navarro, guaranteeing the United States will have a representative in the semifinals.
