Eighteen‑year‑old Merah, forced from Beit Hanun to Rimal by Israeli attacks, sketches the suffering of her people in a school‑turned‑shelter despite scarce supplies, hanging her works on tent walls as attempts to mount exhibitions have so far failed.
Eighteen‑year‑old painter Merah Halid el‑Zaanin, who was forced to flee from Beit Hanun to the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza due to Israeli attacks, reflects the suffering of the Palestinian people in her drawings.
Gifted with the ability to paint since childhood, Merah now tries to create under very difficult conditions in a school that has been converted into a shelter.
With art supplies almost nonexistent in Gaza, the young woman nevertheless hangs her works on the walls of the tent where she is staying.
She says she has tried many times to hold an exhibition in Gaza or abroad, but so far has not succeeded.
