French soccer star Kylian Mbappe is at the center of an international uproar after a Paraguayan senator posted racist remarks about him following France’s World Cup win over Paraguay.
The controversy began July 4 in Philadelphia, when Mbappe scored on a 70th-minute penalty to lift France to a 1-0 victory.
After the final whistle, a photo of Mbappe celebrating in front of Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill quickly spread across social media.

Paraguayan Sen. Celeste Amarilla, a member of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, then posted some pretty wild remarks about the soccer star.
On X, Amarilla called Mbappe a “brute,” claimed he grew up “sucking on coconuts” instead of breast milk and said the most educated creatures he knew were chimpanzees.
She also said Gill should have given Mbappe the middle finger, adding that she does it in the senate and “nothing happens.”

On Instagram, Amarilla called Mbappe “a colonized Cameroonian pretending to be French.” She described him as resentful, newly rich, arrogant and ugly, and complained that Paraguay’s players did not slap him after the match.
Mbappe responded on X on Monday, calling Amarilla “a despicable woman” who is unworthy of her office while defending Paraguay’s national team.
“You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition,” Mbappe wrote. He added that Amarilla’s “recklessness and your brazen racism” had caused the world to forget Paraguay’s historic World Cup run, saying she had become “an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.”

Mbappe added that her “recklessness and brazen racism” had caused the world to forget Paraguay’s historic World Cup run. He called Amarilla “an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country” and vowed not to let people like her spread hatred unchecked.
The French Football Federation condemned Amarilla’s remarks.

Federation President Philippe Diallo called the senator’s comments “vile, criminal and reprehensible.” The federation said it fully supports its captain and filed a complaint with prosecutors, requesting a formal hate crime investigation into Amarilla’s posts.
