Changing face of the Peloponnese: backdrop to The Odyssey braces for tourism surge

Voidokilia Bay, in the southwestern Peloponnese, has a crescent-shaped beach framed by two historical headlands: a Mycenaean tomb on one side and a medieval fortress on the other. Last spring, its crystal-clear waters became a highly secured Hollywood set for The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film starring Matt Damon and Zendaya. The region of Messenia, with its Ottoman castles and wild coastlines, was chosen to evoke the epic nature of myth.

Behind the cinematic postcard, however, this land is navigating a deep identity crisis. The film is expected to bring unprecedented international attention to Messenia. For many locals, the concern was not the production itself but what comes after: a new wave of tourism arriving in a region already struggling with water scarcity, environmental pressure and rapid development.

Over the past 30 years, the average temperature in Messenia has increased by 1.5C. Kostas Lagouvardos, the director of research at the National Observatory of Athens, said: “The combination of scorching summers and snowless winters drastically reduces groundwater recharge, exposing the region to chronic water scarcity precisely during the months of peak tourist influx.”

From the Navarino fortress, the view spans the beach, the shifting dunes and, behind them, the Gialova lagoon. Protected by the Natura 2000 network, this fragile ecosystem hosts 17 habitats and almost 100 endangered or rare species. Its equilibrium is on the verge of collapse.

According to the European research project Coastal, Messenia relies entirely on groundwater, which is increasingly depleted by tourism and irrigation. As freshwater declines, the lagoon experiences critical salinity for almost a third of the year, while wastewater, agricultural runoff and nearby golf courses fuel algal blooms that suffocate aquatic life.

Beyond the lagoon lies Navarino Bay, home to the historic town of Pylos, and, on the opposite shore, Costa Navarino. This sprawling network of luxury resorts and private residences, developed by the Greek tourism company Temes, includes four golf courses, a private marina and countless swimming pools. While the complex has placed Messenia on the international luxury travel map, its scale raises difficult questions in a region already facing mounting environmental pressures.

“Despite being presented as an eco-friendly luxury tourist facility, I don’t believe it is,” said Ioannis Spilanis, a professor emeritus at the University of the Aegean. “The water consumption of such a model is simply incompatible with the resources of this region. The pattern is a tourism monoculture that invades the territory, depriving communities of their uniqueness.”

The investment boom extends well beyond the resorts. International arrivals at Kalamata airport have more than tripled over the past decade, and a new highway has been carving through the hills to shorten travel times to the coast.

Georgia Visviki, the president of the Pylos Women’s Association, said: “These investments bring jobs, but they also put growing pressure on our environment and our identity. We don’t reject tourism; we want a model that works with the local community, not against it. The film will bring even more visitors, but Messenia isn’t ready for that pressure.”

Heading inland, olive groves give way to the hillside village of Dessillas. In a region struggling with depopulation, volunteers transformed an abandoned railway into a walking trail and its old station into a library and community space. Their work has become a symbol of a different future, inspiring a wider movement for slow mobility across the Peloponnese.

“Reactivating the railway network doesn’t require new investments, since the infrastructure already exists, yet it would provide vital lifelines for these decaying inland villages,” say representatives of the Ethos social cooperative. “It would allow residents to move back into their family homes and commute to Kalamata, creating sustainable local jobs. The Hollywood spotlight offers nothing permanent to Messenia; it is this land’s authentic history and landscape that give value to the film, not the other way around.”

Farther south, in the hamlet of Vounaria, traditional pottery is slowly being revived, while in nearby Vasilitsi, a family-run taverna has become an outpost of cultural resistance, preserving ancient looms and passing local traditions to younger generations. Nearby, the Apo Kardias collective produces organic olive oil for customers who have developed a lasting connection with this landscape.

“I don’t think tourism is an absolute evil; it all depends on the model implemented,” said Aris Christopoulos, a co-founder of Apo Kardias. “We don’t want mega-projects or gigantic resorts. We want human-scale tourism, connected to the territory and capable of leaving deep traces, not scars.”

When The Odyssey reaches cinemas, millions of viewers will discover Messenia for the first time. For local communities, however, the real challenge will begin after the credits. Dubrovnik, after Game of Thrones, and Maya Bay, after The Beach, have already shown how global screen exposure can transform fragile places in ways that are difficult to reverse.

Messenia now faces its own choice: between ever-expanding tourist developments and the quieter work of those reopening abandoned stations, reviving traditional crafts and defending olive groves. For many people here, the hope is that the story Hollywood leaves behind will be measured not in scars but in traces.
