Recently, I heard Christian Maxwell, the Republican nominee for Illinois’ 1st Congressional District, say something that I’ve been thinking about ever since. She argued that the minute Black women start seeing themselves as Americans, as fully part of the American story, the entire progressive coalition built on grievances will begin to fall apart.
Her point was that Black women have been trained, indoctrinated and propagandized to see themselves as victims of America, and that’s why progress has been stifled. They’ve been rallying around sinister influences, especially false narratives about what a Black woman is, and that’s kept them locked in a culture of poverty and resentment instead of possibility and opportunity. She’s right. And I’ve spent the past 20 years on the South Side of Chicago watching how this has happened.
In plain words, what has happened has been nothing less than a divorce. I’m not talking about marriage, but the divorce between the Black woman and the American Dream.
I say Black woman here, not to single her out, but because it is a fact. Black women have been targeted by the United States government and nonprofits over the last 60 years in ways that no other race has been.

All of this happened slowly and by design. The War on Poverty promised that we would be helped, and that government programs would lift us up. But, as Shelby Steele said in “What Killed Michael Brown?” the government that had oppressed us only yesterday would now become the agent of our own uplift. There was something sinister in what he said, and he was right. Why would we expect our former oppressor to lead us to the Promised Land? Isn’t it the oppressor’s main goal to alleviate his own guilt, and would we be used in that regard?
One of the bad ideas to come out of that war was the set of rules that punished a mother for keeping a man in the house and rewarded her financially for having more children without one. We called this assistance while fatherlessness shot through the roof. What it really was was an incentive to break up the family. And it worked, as generation after generation was born into this life of dependency. It wasn’t because these families were weak, but because the system promoted dependency as the safest and most responsible choice a mother could make.
Seeing the repercussions of these policies and the continual breakdown of families saddens me. I have never met a stronger woman than a single mother raising four kids on the South Side. These women didn’t choose this system. They were born into it, and my anger has never been at them. My anger is at a bureaucracy that asked them to trust it more than they trusted themselves.

That’s the work of Project H.O.O.D. We’re not in the business of judgment. We’re in what I call the leap business. We help mothers move from a government check that keeps them small and dependent to a paycheck that makes them whole and independent. And let me tell you, that gap is real, and I believe the government creates it on purpose to keep people trapped. Sometimes this gap is $20,000 — money that a mother has to make on her own before independence pays better than dependency. That’s not only a leap of faith, but a leap toward earning more and making capitalism work for you.
I’ve watched a mother of four sit through electrician training and come out with a job at an electrical contracting company. Others are planning to open their own businesses. I’ve watched a mother of two fail the police exam twice before she passed. She now wears the badge and has become one of the best officers on her beat. I didn’t do that. They did that. All we did was stand at the bottom of the gap, provide the services and resources, and then say, “We believe you can make it across.”

And when they do, when that faith shows them what they are capable of and how much God has blessed them, I’m telling you, there is no look on a human face like it. Does anyone celebrate when they get a welfare check? No, but they sure celebrate when they get that paycheck, when they get an apartment of their own choosing and when they go out to a restaurant and treat themselves to a good meal. That’s an American story.

That’s why I believe in the trades. That’s why I believe in reconnecting the Black woman and the Black family to the American Dream. That isn’t charity. It’s the restoration of what was already ours before the government decided it knew better.
Christian Maxwell said it plainly: The moment Black women fall in love with this country, this nation unifies like never before. I believe that too. They are the force. May God make them the force for a new day in America.
