The kindness of strangers: My car had been towed and my kids had no shoes, then a man made a wonderful offer

One of the first things we did after moving from the UK to Vancouver was buy a car. Unfortunately, I didn’t acquaint myself with the new road rules quite as quickly.

Which is to say, I didn’t know you aren’t allowed to park on busy streets after 3pm in Vancouver. Unaware and in a carefree summer mood, I parked outside an ice-cream shop and took my barefoot children in for a treat. We emerged a short time later, sticky and splattered in drops of raspberry, mint and chocolate, and found my car wasn’t there.

We were so fresh to Canada that we were still staying in a hotel. So I headed out on foot, one kid under each arm, towards our accommodation. When I reached the concierge desk of the valet parking place out the front, I frantically turned to the nicely dressed man standing there and launched into explaining our situation.

“Hi, can you help me? I think my car’s been towed away, and my children don’t have any shoes. I’m sorry about the ice-cream, but can you help me get to wherever the towing place is?”

He answered yes, of course, he was happy to help. After I badgered him about whether he’d have car seats for the kids, he said that we best get going, as he had to be back by 5pm. When I asked why, he replied, “Well, I’ve got a flight to catch.”

At that moment I realised this nicely dressed man was not, in fact, a hotel employee.

We laughed as he clarified he wasn’t a member of the concierge, just a regular guy waiting for his car. I refused to let this man spend his time driving us around, and instead got a cab to the towing place.

But his wonderful offer – made so casually, as if it were no trouble at all – had a huge effect on me. Moving to a different country where you know no one can be frightening, but his generosity made me feel so welcome.
