Malaysia called Friday for stronger international cooperation to expand the global halal economy, urging countries and businesses to turn growing demand into greater trade, investment and market access.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi made the remarks at the official opening ceremony of the 22nd Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2026) and Global Halal Summit 2026 (GHaS 2026) at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur.
The ceremony brought together foreign delegations, government officials, industry representatives and participants from around the world.
Calling for a more connected global halal economy, Zahid said policymakers and businesses should work together to translate the sector’s growth into concrete economic opportunities.
“Let us turn that shared ambition into trade, investment and jobs,” he said.
“Our work must continue beyond this gathering. Success will only be measured by the barriers we remove, the partnerships that endure, and the businesses that reach new markets,” he added.
“Together, we have built trust in halal, halalan tayyiban. Now let us build greater prosperity through halal,” Zahid said.
– From certification to global markets
Zahid stressed that halal certification alone is not enough for companies seeking to expand internationally.
“Certification is only the beginning of that journey,” he said.
Companies also need consistent production, suitable packaging, working capital, reliable logistics and an understanding of their target markets, he added.
Zahid said only about 14.7% of halal-certified companies in Malaysia are exporters, stressing the need to help more businesses compete internationally.
“To realize our ambition, we must help more of these companies compete abroad,” he said.
He pointed to Malaysia’s international halal trade initiatives, saying MIHAS in Dubai generated 2.2 billion Malaysian ringgit ($540 million) in sales in 2024, followed by 3.2 billion ringgit ($785 million) at MIHAS in Shanghai in 2025.
– Halal economy built on trust, integrity
Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the development of the halal sector is a collective effort involving Malaysia’s Department of Islamic Development (JAKIM), the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, MATRADE, the Halal Development Corporation and other institutions.
“Halal is not simply a matter of standards, certification or trade,” he said.
Zulkifli said Shariah principles, integrity, ethics and responsibility provide the foundation of trust upon which the halal economy can grow while contributing to economic development and the well-being of communities around the world.
He said Malaysia’s approach to developing the halal economy extends beyond certification to trade, investment, innovation, research, talent development and international market access.
Zulkifli also highlighted the Malaysian Halal Certification System, spearheaded by JAKIM, including its recognition of foreign halal certification bodies in different regions.
He said the system has helped establish a “chain of trust” that strengthens international confidence in halal products and services.
Malaysia, he added, remains committed to strengthening its role in the global halal sector through trusted standards, innovation, technology and strategic international cooperation.
GHaS 2026 is being held under the theme “Shariah and Integrity: Empowering the Global Halal Ecosystem.”
MIHAS 2026, meanwhile, is being held at MITEC from Sept. 23-26 under the theme “Shaping Trust, Driving Resilience,” bringing together companies and industry representatives across the global halal economy.
