For some, coffee is a morning ritual; for others, it is what gets them through a long workday or fuels a late-night conversation. Whatever the occasion, the drink has become a global obsession — one whose legendary origins can be traced to a herd of goats in Ethiopia.
According to legend, a young goat herder named Kaldi lived in the highlands of Ethiopia’s Kaffa region, now widely considered the birthplace of coffee.
One day, as Kaldi took his goats out to graze in the highlands, he noticed something unusual about his herd. Normally sluggish and content to graze quietly, the goats were suddenly restless, leaping about with remarkable energy. They were so lively that they stayed awake all night.
Trail of red berries
The next day, Kaldi watched his goats closely and discovered the source of their seemingly endless energy. The herd had been feeding on a shrub covered in bright red berries nestled among lush green leaves – a plant Kaldi had never seen before.
Curiosity got the better of him, and, taking a chance to find out whether the berries were poisonous, the herder picked a few and chewed on them.
Before long, a surge of energy swept through Kaldi. His fatigue disappeared, and he found himself unable to sit still, just like his goats. It was – according to the legend – humanity’s first caffeine rush.
‘Work of the devil’
Wanting to share his miraculous discovery, Kaldi excitedly took the berries he had collected to a nearby Sufi monastery. But the dervishes feared that the berries might be the work of evil spirits or demons seeking to take hold of people.
In anger, they threw the berries and their seeds into the monastery’s fire.
Then came what may have been one of the most fortunate accidents in human history. As the beans began to roast in the flames, an irresistible coffee aroma slowly filled the monastery.
Unable to resist the smell of the roasting beans, the monks realized that such a wonderful aroma could not possibly come from something evil. They quickly gathered the beans from the embers.
They crushed the beans, mixed them with hot water and prepared what was said to be the first cup of coffee. After spending the night in prayer, the monks discovered that coffee helped them stay awake, alert and focused. They came to regard it as a sacred gift.
From mountains to the world
The miracle supposedly discovered by the goats soon made its way to the shores of Yemen, where Sufis developed the drink as a way to stay awake during nighttime prayers.
In the 16th century, Özdemir Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Yemen, became so enamored with the drink that he brought coffee to the Ottoman palace in Istanbul, helping popularize the brewing method that would become known as Turkish coffee.
From there, coffee made its way to Europe through Venetian merchants and eventually grew into the multibillion-dollar global culture we know today.
Beyond the legend
Although the tale was recorded centuries later in Rome as a captivating legend, the real history of coffee is almost as mysterious as the story itself.
When the red berries chewed by Ethiopians for their energizing effects crossed the Red Sea and reached Yemen, the real transformation began.
In the 15th century, Sufis in Yemeni lodges began roasting and boiling the beans to stay awake during nighttime prayers, laying some of the earliest foundations of the coffee culture we know today.
As ships departing from the port of Mocha carried the beans to new shores, the first coffeehouses opened in Istanbul’s Tahtakale neighborhood in the 1550s, turning coffee drinking into an art of its own.
The frothy coffee brewed in a cezve became a source of inspiration for poets and thinkers before spreading to the streets of Venice and Paris – and eventually conquering the world.
